Frequently Asked Questions

Who participates in Arise?
Arise attracts young (and young at heart) adults who seek a community in which to explore their own spiritual path, to heal from the pain of injustices caused by oppressive practices of traditional “church,” and to fight for justice in our community. Arise is a community where those who go to church and those who will never step foot inside a church can experience the deepest form of acceptance and appreciation for the diverse paths we take to finding what is holy. We welcome the LGBTQ community and those from various faith and cultural backgrounds because to us, faith is a unifying force, not a means of separating us.

Who leads Arise?
Arise is led by two community spiritual advisors, the Rev. Tamara Torres McGovern and the Rev. Katie Holicky, as well as a leadership team composed of several Arise Portland participants.

So... is this a church group?
No, it's not.  Arise Portland is focused on gathering folks around exploration of spirituality and meaning-making, but it's not a church.  Arise Portland is not meant to be or become a church.

I don't really do organized religion.
That's great. Most of us don't - you'll fit right in.
